Advertising ...

Dave Ayres Commercial PhotographerCup cakes, tins of paint, real estate, cars, cafes and railway stations are just some of the items I've photographed for advertising and marketing agencies, auction sites and product literature.

All have one common theme - grab the viewer's attention.

The increasing popularity of online auction sites has raised buyer's expectations. Two lines of text and a poor photograph are highly unlikely to get to the price you are hoping for. Potential customers thumb through catalogues and browse web sites. If all they find is text they will turn the page.

Typically sales literature contains more words than photos, but did you ever buy something that looked awful in the catalogue?

Corporate ...

Dave Ayres Corporate PhotographerWith the array of information available interaction with clients, customers and other businesses requires a higher level of engagement than ever before. People who have the responsibility of directing an organisation's activities need to represent themselves in an array of communication media.

Visit almost any business web site and you will see photos of the company officers, their premises and the working environment. These images tell existing and potential clients more about your business than a mountain of sales literature ever can and strongly influence how your business is perceived.

The main advantage a photographer has over a journalist is that we don’t ask difficult questions.

Event ...

Dave Ayres Event PhotographerReportage photography is a style that captures an event without interfering with what is going on.

There are no set poses or set formats, rather it captures the essence and feel of what was happening as it happened. The style lends itself well to corporate events, conferences, business breakfasts and notable social gatherings, often used as an addition to formal wedding photography.

Food ...

Dave Ayres Glorious Food PhotographyMore than just the way to a man's heart, food is an important part of everyday live. Some cultures would maintain that food is life.

Food photography is about style and ensuring that the setting and the ambiance of the image captures the food in a way that matches the flavour.

Visit any book shop or open any magazine and you will see an array of gorgeous food. So important is the food photography in cookery books that the space dedicated to the images is often more than 60% of the book content.

Creativity and suggestion in an image assists in conveying the message ... a fruity red perhaps.

Head Shots ...

Dave Ayres Headshot Photographer It has been proven that you are 42% more likely to be short listed for a job if you have a professional head shot photo on your CV - 37% more likely to be connected to on a social networking site and a staggering 57% more likely to be selected on a dating web site with a professional head shot rather than a "snap" by a friend.

The same is true in business. A major part of our decission making process is based purely on what we see and in the main it is done without actually thinking about it - look - see - decide.

Motor Sport ...

Dave Ayres Motorsport Photography Having held both 2 & 4 wheel racing licences and having a passion for photography it was inevitable that I would spend a lot of time working for race teams, circuits and motorsport publications.

Race meetings can be as short as an afternoon and as long as a week, whereas the moment of race action needed lasts but a few seconds. Racing action shots are not the only part of a typical brief; sponsors often have detailed requirements ranging from a single photo to a complete book.

Sport ...

Dave Ayres Sports PhotographerI don't think I can remember all of the sporting events I have covered, the different sports must run to thirty or more. Rugby, soccer, judo, karate, swimming, baseball, cricket and gymnastics all come immediately to mind. Mainly the coverage has been for newspapers, magazines and the teams themselves.

Sports photography is more than just recording the action. It is about capturing the effort, be it one against another or just someone battling the urge to quit, it is the emotion and desire that tells the story.

If you see the action though the view finder of your camera, the chances are you missed it.

Theatrical ...

Dave Ayres Theatrical PhotographyTheatrical photos bring a unique set of challenges. The portraits of the lead players need to reflect their character and whereas the lights on the stage may look bright, in photographic terms they are quite soft. Use flash and you can ruin all of the atmospheric lighting done by the stage crew.

A typical assignment includes on stage publicity shots for the media, advertising, the stage crew and portfolio images for the actors.

Past assignments have included the local 'am-dram' society through to capital city productions.

A photographer is more welcome at rehearsals than most critics are on opening night.

Travel ...

Dave Ayres Travel Photographer Most locations have several faces and the clients brief dictates how the location is to be seen through the eye of the camera. The requirement may be hustle and bustle of a vibrant city or perhaps a great place for a relaxing long weekend.

Travel images take time and a willingness to immerse myself in the culture and customs of the location. It often takes longer than you might imagine, often having to accommodate changes in the weather and working at all times of the day and night to capture the required “feel”.

Everywhere looks good, it just depends on whether you are arriving, staying or leaving.

About ...

My first published photos were taken when I was at school - a river yacht race. Numerous years later I'm still creating images.

I'm based in the East Midlands and work everywhere my clients need me.

I've been lucky enough to work all over Europe and New Zealand covering some truly enthralling events and visiting people and places I would not have normally have had the chance to.

The name PictureSports comes from originally covering sports events - 20 years later, it has just stuck. Regards
